Lightning strikes kill 10 people in five districts

Among the deceased in Muradnagar and Barura Upazilas, two were farmers and two were students

Lightning strikes have left 10 people dead and injured several others in five districts across the country.

Four people died in Cumilla's Barura and Muradpur Upazilas, three in Kishoreganj's Austagram and Mithamoin, and one each in Habiganj's Baniachong, Sunamganj's Shalla, and Netrokona's Madan Upazilas on Monday.

CUMILLA

Four people died and one was injured in lightning strikes in Muradnagar and Barura Upazilas of Cumilla on Monday.

Two farmers were killed in Muradnagar and two students in Barura’s Khoshbas union. The deceased are Fahad Hossain, 13, and Bilal Hossain, 14, and farmers Jewel Bhuiyan, 35, and Nikhil Debnath, 60.

Fahad and Bilal were sixth-grade students at Baraharipur High School.

A child named Saymon, 7, from Poyalgoccho village, was injured and admitted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

Police from Barura and Bangra Bazar Stations confirmed the incidents and said the bodies were recovered.

KISHOREGANJ

Three people died in a lightning strike in Austagram and Mithamoin Upazilas of Kishoreganj.

The deceased are - farmer Indrajit Das, 30, Swadhin Mia, 14, and Fulesha Begum, 65.

Austagram Police Station chief Ruhul Amin said police have been sent to the accident sites and necessary measures will be taken.

HABIGANJ

A paddy harvesting worker was killed in a lightning strike in a haor (backswamp) in Habiganj’s Baniachong Upazila. Three others were injured during the incident.

The deceased is Durbasha Das, 35, a resident of Ariamugur village.

The injured are siblings of deceased Durbasha, Bhushan Das, 34, and Sudhanya Das, 28.

A teenager, Bayezid Mia, 13, was also injured. He has been sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Habiganj District Relief and Disaster Management Officer Azadur Rahman said the family of the deceased in the lightning strike will be given Tk 20,000 as assistance.

NETROKONA

A student died in a lightning strike while on his way to a madrasa in Netrokona’s Madan Upazila.

The deceased Arafat Mia, 9, was a student of the local Baitul Jannat Hafiziya Madrasa.

Madan Upazila executive officer (UNO) Oliduzzaman said, “Financial assistance will be provided to his family as per government rules.”

SUNAMGANJ

A college student was killed by lightning while feeding cows in a haor in Shalla Upazila.

The deceased Rimon Talukder was a third-year student of Shalla Degree College.

His body will be handed over to the family after the legal process is completed, said Shalla Police Station chief Shafiqul Islam.
