A court has shown former International Crimes Tribunal prosecutor Tureen Afroz arrested in the murder case of a madrasa student during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

Tureen was seen smiling while she was presented at the dock. She had henna designs on her hand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Mizbah Ur Rahman issued the order after hearing the investigation officer on Wednesday.

The investigation officer in the case, Sub Inspector Abdus Salam of Uttara West Police Station, petitioned to show Tureen arrested on Jun 6. The court had scheduled Wednesday for the hearing in presence of the accused.

Tureen was presented at the dock at 10:20am wearing a helmet and a bullet-proof jacket. At that time, she seemed in a jovial mood. She also wore a black Tip adornment on her forehead and had a henna design on her left hand.

The accused was seen smiling during the hearing as well.

Later, the court granted the petition to show Tureen arrested, and the former ICT prosecutor was taken from the court to the jail at 11:05am under police protection. She was still smiling.

According to the case documents, 12-year-old Arafat Hussain was a 5th grader at Jamia Rawatul Uloom Madrasa on Road No. 4, Sector No. 5 under the jurisdiction of Uttara West Police Station in Dhaka. Hussain joined the anti-government movement to topple it around 8am on Aug 5, the day the Awami League government fell.

Hussain was shot when police and Awami League leaders and activists attacked the protestors. He later died on Dec 22 while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital. The victim’s brother, Md Hasan Ali filed a case with the Uttara West Police Station.

Tureen was arrested from a house in Uttara on Apr 7. The next day, the court sent her on a 4-day remand in a case over the attempted murder of a student.

Later, she was again shown arrested on Apr 21 in the murder case of Anwar Hossain Patwari, who was shot dead during the movement in Mirpur’s Gol Chattar area.

After two days, on Apr 23, the court showed her arrested in a case filed by Uttara West Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act. She has been in jail since then.
