Vehicles impounded by traffic police occupy a large section of the north side of Dhaka's Postogola Bridge. A large number of these seized vehicles are battery-powered rickshaws. The vehicles, which are taken into custody due to various traffic violations such as driving on main roads, often remain unclaimed for extended periods and fall into disrepair.

Battery-run rickshaw drivers blocked roads in the capital’s Dayaganj and Kajla to protest against the High Court decision banning the vehicles from the Dhaka metropolitan area on Wednesday, Nov 20, 2024, causing a massive traffic congestion in the region at that time.

The prevalence of battery-powered rickshaws continues unabated. Having moved from the alleyways of Dhaka to the main roads, they are now appearing on flyovers. Such vehicles on busy flyovers can lead to accidents at any time.

Calls have been growing for long to stop battery-powered rickshaws on the roads. Since the exit of the Sheikh Hasina government, police have been removing these rickshaws from all streets in Dhaka. However, despite these efforts, battery-powered rickshaws are still operating freely.
