Plastic pollution

No water, only waste-even in Monsoon
No water, only waste-even in Monsoon

Once a major source of water, the Shubhadda Canal in Keraniganj, Dhaka, is barely a canal anymore. Instead of fresh water, nearly half of the 7-km long canal is overflowing with waste. Even in the middle of heavy rain, the canal is chock-full of plastic waste. The regular dumping of garment and market scraps is slowly turning it into a landfill.

Despite a market ban, the use of polythene remains widespread. It can still be found in the waste extracted from rivers, drains and other water bodies. A group of low-income individuals make a living by processing these environmentally harmful plastics for recycling.

Buried under plastic waste, Shuvadya canal, next to the Buriganga river in Dhaka’s Keraniganj, is dying. The entire canal is filled with garbage and clothing waste from small garment factories.
