Satellite-based internet service Starlink has kicked off its commercial journey in Bangladesh, offering two monthly packages costing Tk 6,000 and Tk 4,200. Customers will also need to make a one-time payment of Tk 47,000 for the installation of the equipment needed for a connection.
Starlink received two 10-year operating licences from the Bangladesh government last month. One of them is a "Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit Operator Licence" licence the other is a "Radio Communication Operators Licence". Starlink began its operations within a month of receiving the licences.
Starlink announced the launch of its services in Bangladesh on its X handle on Tuesday. Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, the chief advisor's special assistant on ICT affairs, later provided additional details on his Facebook page.
Faiz wrote, "Starlink has officially started its journey in Bangladesh. They informed me about it in a phone call yesterday [Monday] afternoon and confirmed it on their X handle this morning.”
"Initially, Starlink is offering two packages -- Starlink Residence and Residence Light. The monthly cost for one package is Tk 6,000, while the other costs Tk 4,200. However, there will be a one-time cost of Tk 47,000 for equipment set-up. There is no speed and data limit here. Individuals can use unlimited data with a speed of up to 300 Mbps."
He continued, "Clients in Bangladesh can place orders from today. Through this, the chief advisor's hope at the beginning of the journey [to launch Starlinks’s internet service within 90 days] has been realised.”
While the service may be expensive, Faiz noted that it offers a premium alternative for high-speed internet, particularly in areas lacking fibre connectivity.
"NGOs, freelancers and entrepreneurs will have uninterrupted high-speed internet throughout the year."
Faiz added that the chief advisor congratulated everyone involved on the successful launch of Starlink.
Starlink's post on X read, "From now on, high-speed low-latency internet service will be available in Bangladesh."
Latency is the measurement of the response time after clicking on the internet. Latency drops as the internet speed goes up.
