A newborn wrapped in a blanket and towel has been rescued from a footpath near Gulistan’s Ahad Police Box.

It was then taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday afternoon, said Paltan Police Station Sub-Inspector Zahidul Alam.

“The baby was discovered on the footpath by a woman named Munni and a few others. Finding no guardian nearby, they brought the baby to the police station,” he said.

“We then took the newborn to Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” he added.

Dr Ismat, a medical officer at the hospital’s neonatal unit, said: “The baby appears to have been born prematurely. There are several health complications, and the baby is underweight."

“We’ll need to run tests to assess the condition fully, but the baby is not in a stable state at the moment.”

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the baby’s abandonment.
