National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Jubairul Alam Manik has been served a show-cause notice after he described his party as “the biggest mafia” at an Eid-ul-Azha reunion in Chattogram.
The letter, sent on Tuesday by Joint Office Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat, asked the central committee member to respond in writing within three days, explaining why organisational action should not be taken against him.
The party described Jubairul’s comments as “objectionable and against organisational norms”, adding that his remarks had damaged NCP’s image in public and cast the party in a negative light.
Jubairul, who was the chief guest at Monday’s event held at a community centre in Anwara Upazila, told the audience: “We carried out the July Uprising successfully.
“No one has been able to lead like this in the past 16 to 17 years. This was a political revolution.”
He added, “If someone says the students have done their job and should now return to campus, we say we’ve removed a mafia figure who lasted 16 years.
“If anyone tries to become a mafia again using tricks, we’ll say -- there is no bigger mafia than us.”
