National Consensus Commission Vice President Ali Riaz hopes to have “big progress” made on the “National Constitutional Council” proposed by the Constitution Reform Commission.
The third day of the second round of the commission’s meetings began at 11am on Wednesday at the Foreign Service Academy on Dhaka’s Bailey Road.
Riaz made the comment in his introductory speech.
Ali Riaz said, “Today we have decided to discuss the National Constitutional Council proposed by the Constitution Reform Commission. Apart from this, (we’ll discuss the) presidential elections and district coordination councils.”
‘‘We hope to make a big progress through these discussions.”
Ali Riaz said that in the previous discussion, some opinions emerged about the National Constitutional Council, and in view of those opinions, some alternative proposals have been made.
“Those proposals have been shared with you (political parties). We hope to make big progress regarding this. We’ll be happy to make a decision on these matters today.”
Riaz told the political parties, “We also said that it is more important to reach consensus through discussions with all, rather than hurry to complete everything and we’ll try our best to do so.”
Due to the time constraints, Riaz suggested drafting a National Charter by July. He solicited the cooperation of all parties in this regard.
Commission members Badiul Alam Mazumdar, Ayub Mia, Safar Raj Hossain, retired justices Emdadul Haque, and Iftekharruzzaman, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor (Consensus) Monir Haider are attending the meeting.
Jamaat-e-Islami, which “boycotted” the discussions on Tuesday, has rejoined after a day.
The meeting is being attended by leaders from 30 political parties including BNP, Jatiya Ganofront, Bangladesh Revolutionary Workers Party, and CPB.
Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor (Consensus) Monir Haider said that on Wednesday, discussions will be held with the political parties on the National Constitutional Council, the presidential election, and district coordination council.
In addition, previous discussions on Article 70 of the Constitution, Parliamentary Standing Committee, Women's representation in the Lower House, and the recommendations of the Electoral Reform Commission will be part of the meeting agenda.
