BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said there is no need to carry out reforms outside what is agreed upon by all.

He made these remarks after a meeting with the Bangladesh Jatiyo Party (BJP) at the BNP Chairperson’s Office in Gulshan on Sunday.

Khosru said, “We are not going to have a BAKSAL in Bangladesh. Those who believe everyone must agree on one decision, carry a BAKSAL idea like Sheikh Hasina’s father did.

“Different parties will have different philosophies, thoughts, and opinions.

“Reforms can only be made where there is an agreement. Implementing anything beyond that has to come through a democratic and electoral process, it has to come with the mandate of the people.”

He said, “The question is why these issues that have been agreed upon (reform proposals) are not being presented before the nation.

“Everyone [all political parties] has already submitted them, a lot of time has passed, and the discussions are over.

“Let the nation know where consensus has been reached, and based on that, we will sign the charter and move towards the elections. There is no scope to go beyond this.”

Khosru said, “The doubts and concerns created among the people today due to not presenting an election roadmap will not bring any good for the upcoming election process.

“We must quickly assure the nation with an election roadmap, showing that the country is moving towards democracy and regaining it.

“Through them, you must show the nation a democratic transition is under way. Preparations are being made both inside and outside the country.

“Every investor coming to Bangladesh has one question: when will the elections be held?”

BJP Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho said, “We should go towards the elections by adopting a national charter on the reforms that everyone has agreed upon.

“Your 50 political parties may have different opinions on many issues. You can’t postpone the election or create a chaotic environment based on that.”

“It is possible to hold the election before December. I think the election roadmap is now the people’s demand and the government should concentrate on it immediately.”

Since Apr 17, the BNP has been holding discussions with its allies and alliance partners to decide the next course of action.
