BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has expressed hope that democracy will soon be restored in Bangladesh.

“We will very soon see democracy reinstated in Bangladesh, let this be our pledge on the death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman,” she said.

Khaleda made the remarks on Thursday at an event marking the death anniversary of the party’s founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.

She said, “The democracy and sovereignty for which he [Ziaur Rahman] sacrificed his life continues to be restricted at every step.”

“Remember, we must honour Zia by following the politics of democracy and development for all, which can resolve all issues,” she added, calling on party activists.

Former president Ziaur Rahman was assassinated on May 30, 1981, by a group of army officers at the Chittagong Circuit House while in office.

This year commemorates his 44th death anniversary event, which Khaleda joined as the chief guest via video call.

The last time she participated in a death anniversary programme for Ziaur Rahman in person was in 2017, prior to her imprisonment.

BNP’s Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman also joined the discussion virtually from London.
