The National Citizen Party (NCP) is finalising preparations for official registration, including adopting its constitution, selecting party symbols, and forming committees across districts and sub-districts.
Several central leaders say the party has shortlisted five to six electoral symbols, including a clenched fist, inkpot and pen, laptop, and water lily.
Sarwar Tusher, joint convenor of the NCP’s central committee, told bdnews24.com: “We will file our registration application with the Election Commission before the deadline.
“The party constitution is approved; one more meeting this week will resolve final technical points.”
More than a dozen new political parties have emerged since the fall of the Awami League government in the Aug 5 Uprising.
The NCP launched on Feb 28, rooted in Anti-discrimination Student Movements and the National Citizens’ Committee.
The Election Commission (EC) initially set Apr 20 as the registration deadline for the general polls, later extended to Jun 22 after multiple applications including NCP’s.
Senior Joint Convenor Ariful Islam Adib said: “All registration preparations are complete.”
The NCP had been using Level 15 of Rupayan Tower in Dhaka’s Banglamotor--once the office of the National Citizens’ Committee--which is now mostly inactive.
The party has also been using an office on the second floor of the same building, which is likely to be chosen as its permanent headquarters, Ariful hinted.
Sarwar said: “We have announced 30 district committees and will declare 120 sub-district committees before applying.
“The EC requires committees in 22 districts and 100 sub-districts before inspection and registration approval.”
He added that broad consensus exists on the constitution, with some technical issues pending discussion.
Tushar confirmed that “five to six” symbols have made it into their shortlist.
Earlier in June, NCP began appointing committees in two Dhaka metropolitan areas.
Before Eid-ul-Azha, committees were formed in multiple sub-districts across Panchagarh, Gopalganj, Narail, Brahmanbaria, Bagerhat and others.
District committees also launched in Shyamnagar, Tangail, Kurigram, Narayanganj, Jhalakathi, Meherpur, Barishal, Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Lalmonirhat, Narail, Chuadanga, and Munshiganj.
Post-Eid, committees were added in Bandarban, Bogura, Jamalpur, and further Tangail sub-districts.
New party registration rules require an active central office, committees in at least one-third of districts, and support from at least 100 sub-district or metropolitan police areas with 200 registered voters each.
Applicants must submit ten mandatory documents including constitution, manifesto (if any), rules, party logo and flag images, central committee list, bank details, financial statements, funding sources, authorisation letters, treasury receipt for the non-refundable Tk 5,000 fee, and proof of fulfilling registration criteria.
