Leaders of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and National Citizens Committee have decided on the leadership for the new National Citizen Party, or NCP, which is set to make its official debut.

Helmed by Nahid Islam as convenor and Akhtar Hossain as member secretary, the party will be led by a group of 11 individuals, Citizens’ Committee spokesperson Samantha Sharmin and Anti-discrimination Student Movement Chief Organiser Abdul Hannan Masud confirmed to bdnews24.com on Friday.

Nahid, who recently stepped down as an advisor to the interim government, was a coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. He completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Department of Social Science at Dhaka University.

The Anti-discrimination Student Movement platform shares many core members with Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti, or Democratic Student Power, led by Akhtar, a former social welfare secretary of DUCSU and student of the Department of Law.

National Citizens’ Committee Convenor Nasiruddin Patwary, a Dhaka University Chhatra Federation leader, will be the NCP’s chief coordinator.

The leaders involved in launching the party are set to be officially unveiled in front of a huge crowd in Manik Mia Avenue on Friday.

The NCP is entering politics with eyes on the next general, with prominent figures of the mass movement at the forefront.

Akhtar said: “We’ve talked about pursuing centrist politics led by the youth. We’re talking about politics that serve the interests of the country and a self-reliant foreign policy.”

“We’ve talked about finding a solution by bringing all views and paths to a consensus. That is the highest position on the issue of people’s civic identity, rights and dignity. Through this, we will unite people of all views and paths.”
