India has accused Pakistan of breaching a ceasefire agreement just hours after it was announced, vowing to respond decisively to the violations.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking at a late-night press briefing on Saturday, said the country’s armed forces had been ordered to “strongly deal with violations along the border”, according to multiple media reports.
“For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding we arrived at earlier this evening,” Misri said. “This is a breach of the agreement reached earlier today. We call on Pakistan to halt the violation.”
Reports of cross-border shelling and drone attacks emerged from Kashmir shortly after the truce was announced. Residents in Jammu, Indian-administered Kashmir, reported hearing blasts and seeing projectiles in the sky.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Kashmir education minister confirmed that skirmishes were continuing along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border dividing the disputed region.
The ceasefire had been announced earlier in the day by US President Donald Trump on his social media platform, declaring it the result of “a long night of talks” mediated by the United States.
Pakistan has yet to respond to Misri’s accusations.
