Indian police have arrested Anuradha Paswan, known as “looteri Dulhan” or “looting bride” for cheating 25 innocent grooms and fleeing with jewellery and cash worth a hefty amount, reports NDTV.
Each time she would pick a new name, a new city, and a new identity to ensnare men into her fake marriages, play the role of an ideal bride and perfect daughter-in-law before running away with jewellery and cash.
To nab her, Sawai Madhopur Police tricked Anuradha into a fake marriage, leading to her arrest.
A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS NEXT DOOR
Alone, poor and helpless, living with an unemployed brother. She wants to marry, but financial constraints prevent her from starting a new chapter in her life. This was the image of the pretty but poor bride-to-be that 32-year-old Anuradha portrayed.
However, she was the head of a fake marriage gang, known for cheating people of money. Anuradha’s gang members took her pictures and profile to prospective grooms, pitching for an ideal match. The matchmaker, originally a gang member, charges Rs 200,000 for setting up the match.
Once the deal is sealed, a marriage consent letter is prepared. The couple takes vows in a temple or at home, as per the rituals. And then bother act began.
Anuradha pretended to be cute and naive with the groom and his family. She established bonds with family member and won their trust.
Within a few days, she executes the final act of her plan - to intoxicate the family's food and run away with jewellery, cash, and other valuables.
Vishnu Sharma, one of the 25 victims, had even taken our a loan for their marriage.
On Apr 20, Vishnu, a resident of Sawai Madhopur, married Anuradha from Madhya Pradesh. The marriage occurred as per the Hindu rituals, in the presence of friends and family. It was arranged through broker Pappu Meena, for which Vishnu paid him Rs 200,000.
Within two weeks of the marriage, Anuradha fled with jewellery worth Rs 125, 000, Rs 30,000 in cash and a mobile phone costing Rs 30,000.
"I run a handcart and got married by taking put a loan. I had also borrowed a mobile. She took that too. I never sensed that she would cheat me," said Vishnu.
Recalling the night his bride left his house, Vishnu said, he returned from work late at night and slept soon after dinner.
"I usually don't sleep much, but that night I slept like a baby, as if someone gave me a sleeping pill," he said.
Vishnu’s mother was also in shock. The Sharma family lodged a police complaint.
RAJASTHAN POLICE PLOT
The Sawai Madhopur police laid a trap for Anuradha following the information shared by Vishnu. A constable acted as a potential groom by posing as a customer for the agent, who showed pictures of several women.
"Upon investigation, all documents and marriage agreements were found to be fake. From our team, we prepared a constable as a groom and tricked the woman into marriage," said a police official.
Anuradha was arrested in Bhopal.
