Boumela: a festival of Hindu wives on Bangla New Year's Day

Every year, starting on Pahela Baishakh, the Bangla New Year’s Day, married Hindu women in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon take part in Boumela, or the festival of wives, under a banyan tree next to the local upazila council. They worship the tree, considering it an incarnation of the goddess Siddheswari, for a peaceful family life.

As a part of the Boumela ritual, a married Hindu woman carries a platter full of soil on her head to put it at the base of a banyan tree, known as an incarnation of goddess Siddheshwari in Narayangaj’s Sonargaon. Photo: Mostafigur Rahman
