Who will stop canal pollution in Dhaka?
The canals in Dhaka are becoming clogged with plastic waste. A canal along the Kaderabad Housing and Zafrabad in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur is filled with such garbage.

Plastic waste entirely covers the water in the canal. Locals say the water body has not been cleaned for a long time. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi
The water level of the canal rose due to a spell of persistent rain in Dhaka over the past several days, causing plastic garbage to pile up along its sides and on the path. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi
The extended lack of renovation work on the canal is affecting its navigability. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi
A lack of awareness among local residents is perpetuating the waste buildup in the canal. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi
