Over 5.5 million people in 11 districts have been affected by the recent flooding in Bangladesh. The scope and scale of the disaster has prompted heated discussion on the cause of the flooding and what could have been done to minimise the damage.
Prof Ainun Nishat, an expert on water resources and climate change, told ‘Inside Out’ that one key issue is the way disaster management on major weather events – such as floods and storms – are handled in Bangladesh. He says that, much of the time, reports and warnings from the agencies responsible are too difficult and full of technical language for the public to understand.
