Two people have died from COVID-19 in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, bringing the virus death toll this year to three, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The previous COVID-related death was reported on Jun 5.

One of the dead was aged between 21 and 30 from Dhaka Division, while the other, aged between 71 and 80, was from Chattogram Division.

Both were women--one died at a government hospital and the other at a private facility.

In its regular bulletin on Friday, the DGHS said 15 new cases were confirmed from 174 samples tested in the 24 hours leading up to Friday morning.

The positivity rate stood at 11.19 percent.

The total number of COVID cases so far this year has now risen to 255, with 97 of them detected in just the first 13 days of June.

In Dhaka city, nine people tested positive from 102 samples. In Chattogram district, two cases were found from 46 samples, while one case each was detected in Cox’s Bazar from 18 samples and Brahmanbaria from three samples.

Cumilla reported two positive cases from five samples.

Three patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, the health directorate said.

Since the outbreak began in 2020, Bangladesh has tested 15,726,794 samples, detecting 2,051,800 infections.

The total COVID death toll stands at 29,502.

The virus claimed 7,559 lives in 2020, followed by a record 20,513 deaths in 2021.

In 2022, 1,368 people died of COVID, while 37 deaths were reported in 2023. In 2024, 22 people have died from the virus.

Earlier, the DGHS issued precautionary measures in response to a surge in cases of new sub-variants of COVID-19 in several neighbouring countries, including India.

On Monday, the authorities have advised against non-essential travel to India and other countries experiencing virus outbreaks. At the same time, increased health screening and monitoring have been instructed at all land and airports to help contain the risk.
