PM speaks to Mustafizur

It was performed by experienced orthopaedic surgeon Andrew Wallace on Wednesday afternoon.

Chief physician of Bangladesh Cricket Board, Dr Debashish Chowdhury, was present in the operating theatre during the procedure.

"The surgery commenced at 4:10pm London time. It took 70 minutes. Mustafizur was then taken to the recovery room. He will be brought to a cabin after an hour," Dr Chowdhury said.

Mustafizur will spend the night at the hospital. Wallace will take another look at him at 8am BST (1pm BdST) on Friday, he added.

"We will speak with the surgeon again. He will let him undergo physiotherapy here if necessary, but if not, we will bring him to Bangladesh on Wednesday."

The 20-year-old pacer received a phone call from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina before going under the knife.

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza also called him at 9am on Thursday local time while numerous good wishes from his countrymen kept pouring in.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan, who flew to London to give support to Mustafizur, was by the youngster at the hospital.

If everything goes as planned, he will leave hospital on Friday and visit the clinic a couple of times after that.

Media Committee chief Jalal Yunus told reporters at the BCB building on Thursday that county team Sussex had foot the bill for Mustafizur's treatment and several tests before the surgery.

But BCB will take care of the surgery cost and associated hospital bills.

Mustafizur had recovered from the injury after returning from the Indian Premier League but it resurfaced after he played two Twenty20 matches with Sussex Sharks.
