Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been diagnosed with a heart blockage after he was rushed to the hospital with severe chest pain during a Dhaka Premier League match in Savar.

Doctors have placed a stent to restore blood flow, and he is now under observation in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Begum Fazilatunnesa Hospital in Savar, according to Dhaka Premier League match referee Debabrata Pal.

"Tamim underwent an angiogram, which detected a blockage in his heart. A stent has been placed, and he is currently being monitored in the CCU," he said.

The legendary opener was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in their clash against Shinepukur Cricket Club at the BKSP's Ground No. 3 on Monday. He took part in the toss but was unable to take the field as he complained of severe pain in his chest before the match started, according to Mohammedan official Tariqul Islam Titu. He was immediately taken to the hospital.

Initially, there were plans to transfer him to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, but his condition did not allow for it, according to Titu.

Debashis Chowdhury, chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), said that Tamim’s condition is somewhat serious and he is currently under intensive observation in the cardiology department. He will be moved to Dhaka once his condition improves.

"In the morning, Tamim experienced chest pain, so he was taken to the nearest hospital. Initial tests, including an ECG, showed mild irregularities. Tamim himself suggested taking an air ambulance to Dhaka as he was feeling discomfort," Debasish said.

"An air ambulance was arranged at the BKSP, but as he was being taken back to the field, his pain intensified again. He was rushed back to the hospital, where doctors detected what seemed like a massive heart attack. He is under observation now. That’s all we know for now. We are heading to the hospital and will get more updates later," he added.

The BCB had scheduled its 19th General Meeting on Monday, but upon receiving news of Tamim’s condition, the meeting was postponed. Several board directors are reportedly heading to the hospital.

CHIEF ADVISOR INQUIRES ABOUT TAMIM’S CONDITION

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has made inquiries regarding Tamim’s condition after he was hospitalised.

Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder spoke to BCB CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury on behalf of the chief advisor.

Nizam said that Tamim had undergone an angiogram and that the BGB was in regular contact with his physicians, ready to extend any support required for his treatment.

He also said he would provide regular updates on his condition to the chief advisor.
