Veteran Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim could not say goodbye to ODIs from the pitch but received a “guard of honour” in a Dhaka Premier League match.

The 37-year-old announced his retirement from the 50-over international format through a social media post on Wednesday night.

A member of Mohammedan Sporting Club, Mushfiqur was warming up for the match against Rupganj Tigers Cricket Club in the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

However, he was seen waiting outside the boundary while his teammates entered the pitch.

What followed next was a tribute to the experienced Tiger as he entered the field with players from his club standing on either side.

During the toss, Mohammedan captain Tamim Iqbal complimented his long-term comrade: “Mushfiqur Rahim has been an exceptional ambassador for Bangladeshi cricket. His unparalleled achievements will be remembered for years to come. There are many outstanding cricket players from Bangladesh, but Mushfiqur is the one who anybody should look up to.”

Mushfiqur, who ended his T20I career after the 2022 Asia Cup, played his final ODI in the ICC Champions Trophy match against New Zealand.

He was widely criticised for his lean performance in the elite ICC tournament.

He stood behind the wicket for the 50-over league match game on Thursday, even helping Tamim in arranging the players on the field.

Mushfiqur was involved in 297 dismissals with the wicketkeeping gloves on.
