Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists have staged a two-hour sit-in by blocking the Shahbagh intersection protesting against what they called negligence in the investigation and demanding the arrest of the main accused in the killing of its Dhaka University (DU) leader Shahriar Alam Shammo.

They gathered at the Shahbagh intersection around 4pm on Sunday, leading to severe traffic congestion in and around the area.

The traffic began to ease after the protesters left the spot around 6pm.

Earlier, Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said Shammo was killed in a similar manner as Primeasia University student Zahidul Islam Parvez. The murder case has been awaiting trial.

"We want to warn from the sit-in that if any of our workers are attacked like this, we will not sit idly.”

He demanded the resignation of the DU administration on behalf of the protesters, saying: “You have seen how heartbreaking the vice-chancellor has behaved. He has not yet contained Shammo in his heart.

"If the trial of the Tofazzal Hossain’s lynching had been held, such a murder would not have been seen again."

Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam alleges the Dhaka University administration is still not accepting their responsibility and admitting negligence of security.

“They have not been able to convince us to this day whether they will ensure justice for Shammo’s murder.

"We, therefore, extend our full support to the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal."

The Chhatra Dal president also criticised the interim government and the student leaders who led the July Uprising.

He said, "We have not heard anything from this government since the Shammo’s killing.

"We have not even seen those who claim credit for the July-August movement at Shammo’s funeral.”

Addressing the government, Rakib said, "The interim government has not provided any support to the victims of enforced disappearances by the Awami League government in the last 16 years. We have not seen any sympathy even for those who have been killed following the July Uprising.

"Nothing can stop us if we march from Shahbagh to the Jamuna," he warned, saying: “If we see such negligence again, we will hold a programme there.”

Earlier, at around 1pm, the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal brought out a black flag march demanding justice for Shammo’s killing, resignation of the vice-chancellor and proctor and a safe campus.

The DU student was stabbed at Suhrawardy Udyan around 11pm on May 13. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around midnight, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

On Wednesday morning, his older brother Shariful Alam filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station, accusing 10 to 12 people.

Shammo was a student in the 2018-19 academic year at the Institute of Education and Research of Dhaka University. He was also the literature and publication secretary of the AF Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal. He hailed from Sirajganj’s Ullapara.
