Dhaka University has announced a one-day closure on Sunday to mourn the death of its former vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique.

The decision was taken in line with university traditions to honour and pay respects to the late professor, the university’s spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday.

The statement said following standard procedures for the passing of a former vice-chancellor and professor, the university arranged public announcements on campus, issued condolence messages, held special prayers at the central mosque, and observed other customary practices.

"Prof Arefin Siddique’s funeral prayers and burial arrangements were made in keeping with his family’s decision. The university administration respects this decision," the statement added.

Earlier, Prof Arefin was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Neuroscience Unit at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital after falling ill.

The next day, on Mar 7, Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan visited him at the hospital to check on his condition and treatment.

During his hospitalisation, the university administration maintained regular contact with his family, close friends, and colleagues.

After his passing, VC Niaz and other senior officials attended his funeral and burial, providing full administrative support for the proceedings, according to the statement.
