Sumit Chowdhury Bipu, 21, is now under treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Joynul Abedin told bdnews24.com that Sumit hacked his mother Kumkum Chowdhury, 43, to death with a large kitchen knife at their Gosaildanda home on Saturday afternoon.

His elder brother Somnath Chowdhury found Kumkum's dead body and Sumit in a bloody state attempting to commit suicide with the same sharp weapon when he arrived home, Abedin said.

Relatives have told police that Sumit has had 'psychological issues' since failing in his HSC examinations. Kumkum was also 'mentally unstable' due to illness for a long time, they have said.

Kumkum lived in the house with her two sons. Her husband Sukhmoy Chowdhury, an income tax lawyer, works and lives in Dhaka.

Police official Abedin said, "Sumit admitted to kill his mother while he was being taken to the operation theatre at the hospital."

Police suspect Sumit killed his mother for reprimanding him on his failure to pass the exams. His results did not change even after re-evaluation. The re-evaluated results were published earlier in the day.

AKM Mohiudin Selim, OC of Bandar Police Station, said the kitchen knife used in the killing was recovered from the flat on the second floor of the building.

Suppi Chowdhury, the landlady, said Kumkum rented the house two years ago.

Ziku Ghosh, who lives in the other flat on the floor, said Sumit usually did not talk much with the others in the building.

Inspector Badrul Mamun said Kumkum had several sharp weapon wounds on her neck. One of her fingers had also been cut off.

Sumit's wound was on the back of his shoulder.

"Both mother and son were mentally disturbed. The murder might have happened as a consequence of this depression," Inspector Mamun said.
