Bangladesh will know the date of Eid-ul-Azha on Wednesday evening, when the National Moon Sighting Committee meets in Dhaka to determine the start of the Islamic month of Zil Hajj.

The meeting is set for 6:30pm at the Islamic Foundation hall and will be presided over by Religious Affairs Advisor AFM Khalid Hossain, according to a media statement issued by the foundation on Tuesday.

The public has been asked to report any sighting of the new moon by calling (02-223381725, 02-41050912, 02-41050916, 02-41050917), sending a fax (02-223383397 or 02-9555951), or notifying their local district or Upazila administration.

If the new moon is seen, the month of Zil Hajj begins on Thursday and Eid will be on Friday, Jun 7.

If not, the month starts Friday and Eid falls on Saturday, Jun 8.

Eid-ul-Azha, celebrated on the 10th of Zil Hajj, is one of the most sacred Islamic festivals.

It commemorates the spirit of sacrifice, with Muslims offering animals as an expression of faith and devotion.

The government initially declared holidays on Jun 5–6 and 8–10.

Later, Jun 11–12 were added by executive order, followed by the regular weekend on Jun 13–14--making a 10-day holiday for public servants.
