A madrasa teacher in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila has allegedly tied up and beat a student for eating two orange wedges leftover from iftar.

The boy was admitted to 250-bed Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, said Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station chief Abdullah Al Mamun.

According to the victim's family, the incident occurred inside Mathurapur Ideal Orphanage on Wednesday morning, sparking outrage in the area.

The teacher, Hafiz Imran Howlader sensed the approaching danger and reportedly fled the orphanage.

Mohammad Alauddin, president of the orphanage management committee, said: “A man arranged an iftar meal for the orphanage’s children on Monday.

“After iftar, some oranges were left over. The student ate two slices from them.”

“Upon learning about it, teacher Hafiz Imran Howlader called the student on Wednesday morning and tortured him,” he added.

“The orphanage management committee held a meeting as soon as they became aware of the incident but the teacher fled before that.”

“He has been temporarily dismissed.”

Alauddin said he had filed a case at the local police station.

Jhenaidah police chief Abdullah said an investigation into the matter had been launched.

Local residents gathered at the orphanage upon hearing about the incident and demanded justice for the student.

The victim’s classmates said his body bore red marks from the beating with a stick.
