Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has confirmed receiving a letter from Tulip Siddiq, a British MP and niece of the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, requesting a meeting with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
Speaking at the Bangladesh High Commission in London on Tuesday, he said any response would be handled “through legal channels”.
The interim prime minister is on a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom.
Tulip, in her message, expressed her wish to meet him during the trip.
She hopes the meeting will help clear up “misunderstandings” surrounding corruption allegations.
In her letter, Tulip invited Yunus to join her for lunch or afternoon tea at the House of Commons to discuss the issue.
Asked about the matter during Tuesday’s press briefing in London, Shafiqul said: “We’ve received a letter.”
Asked if a response would be given, he said: “It is a legal matter and will be resolved legally.”
In response to a question, the press secretary said Tulip was not in the All-Party Parliamentary Group.
News of Tulip’s letter appeared in most Bangladeshi news outlets on Sunday-- a day before Yunus’s visit began.
On that day, Shafiqul told bdnews24.com: “We have not yet received any letter from her.”
He also shared the same statement on his Facebook page.
That day, a source close to Tulip told bdnews24.com’s London correspondent Syed Nahas Pasha that the letter had been sent on Jun 4, but no response had been received.
According to the source, Tulip does not understand why the Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC) is after her. Instead of contacting her in London, they are sending letters to her address at Dhaka’s Sudha Sadan.
Tulip wants to sit with Yunus and clarify everything, the source said, adding that she has all the papers and wants to show them to him.
In the letter, Tulip wrote: “I hope this meeting will help clear the misunderstanding with the Anti-Corruption Commission in Dhaka, which has prompted questions about me in connection with my aunt, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.”
Tulip is a Labour Party MP for Hampstead and Highgate in London.
Facing allegations of irregularities and corruption in both the UK and Bangladesh, she stepped down from her post as UK City minister in January amid mounting criticism.
