A fire that broke out at a “jhut”, or waste fabric warehouse in Gazipur’s Konabari has been brought under control after burning through around 20 small and large jhut storage units and a yarn factory.

The flame was brought under control around 2pm on Saturday following a two-hour effort by six units, said Mohammad Mamun, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service.

The fire started around 11:45am in the Deuliyabari neighbourhood of Konabari.

“The Konabari Fire Station received the call at 11:50am and two units were dispatched immediately. Firefighters began working to control the flames at 12:05pm,” Mamun said.

By the time crews arrived, the fire had already spread across adjacent areas.

The location is packed with numerous small and large waste fabric warehouses. To the left of the site sits a yarn production factory and a large yarn storage facility.

The area also includes more warehouses, residential houses, a mosque, and other establishments.

Mamun said the fire quickly spread to these neighbouring facilities, prompting the firefighters to quickly secure the perimeter.

Six units from the city’s Sarabo Modern Fire Station and Bhogra Modern Fire Station eventually managed to control the blaze at 2:05pm.

According to the Fire Service official, nearly 20 warehouses, a yarn factory, and a yarn storage facility were burned before the fire was contained.

He said the swift response helped protect nearby homes and other establishments from major damage.

The Fire Service is working to determine the extent of the losses, but the cause of the fire could not be confirmed immediately.
