Two brothers who protested the lynching of a suspected thief have been beaten to death in Narsingdi’s Palash.
The incident took place at 8pm on Monday, according to Palash Police Station chief Monir Hossain.
The victims have been identified as Sakib Mia, 20, and Rakib Mia, 26.
According to locals, Himel -- a man from the victims’ village -- was lynched by a group of people from Bhagdi village on Monday morning on suspicion of theft.
Later that evening, Rakib and Sakib, along with some others, went to Bhagdi to protest the attack. A heated argument broke out, which escalated into a mob beating, leaving the two brothers critically injured.
Upon receiving the news, police and locals rescued the two in critical condition. Sakib was taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, while Rakib was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. They both died en route.
However, the victims' family alleges that local criminals from Bhagdi killed the brothers for “refusing to pay extortion money”.
Dr Sudip Kumar Saha of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital said, "One was brought dead to the hospital, while the other died on the way to Dhaka. Their bodies had deep, visible wounds."
Further details will be learnt after the post mortem, he added.
OC Monir said that police have visited the scene and are investigating the incident to take legal action against those involved.
