Doctors must be present at assigned posts, says Yunus

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has directed doctors to remain at their designated posts following transfers.

He gave the instruction during a ceremony marking the handover of the Health Reform Commission’s report at the state guest house, Jamuna on Monday.

Describing the commission’s findings as a “landmark initiative”, Yunus said: “The health sector has been facing challenges for a long time. If we can resolve them through this initiative, it will be a historic achievement.”

He noted that the commission’s recommendations could play a vital role in addressing persistent issues in the country’s healthcare system, and particularly emphasised the urgent implementation of recommendations wherever possible.

“One of the major problems is the shortage of doctors,” said Yunus. “And even when doctors are available, they are not where they are needed the most. This issue must be resolved for good.”

Stressing the need for a decentralised healthcare system, he added, “Without decentralisation, these problems cannot be resolved. Doctors must be present at their assigned posts.”

The report was formally handed over to the chief advisor by the commission, led by National Professor AK Azad Khan.

With the submission of the healthcare report, all 11 commissions proposing state reform initiatives have completed forwarding recommendations to the Chief Advisor’s Office.
