At least three police officers have been injured when a man entered Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka in the dead of night and began punching them indiscriminately.

The incident occurred around 1:45am on Tuesday, said Nazrul Islam, chief of Pallabi Police Station.

The assailant was identified as Abdur Razzak Fahim. “The man, aged around 22-23 years, entered my office and asked what actions we were taking to control the worsening law and order situation after a series of murders. I told them we were working to maintain order,” Nazrul said.

However, according to Nazrul, Fahim became agitated and responded: “You aren't doing anything. You’re not even aware that a murder has taken place.”

Fahim's frustration grew when Nazrul said he was unaware of any murder.

The man snapped back, saying, “Your duty officer knows about it but you don't?"

Nazrul then took the man to the duty officer’s room and inquired about the alleged murder. The duty officer said he also had no information on such an incident.

Fahim then pointed to two people who came to seek assistance from the police at the duty officer’s room and said: "They know about the murder."

But when they were questioned, both individuals also denied knowing anything about the matter, according to Nazrul.

“I held his hand and asked why he was speaking like that. Suddenly, he started punching me.”

As other police officers rushed to intervene, Fahim attacked them as well. One officer suffered a fractured finger and another had facial swelling.

Police later handcuffed Fahim to bring the situation under control, said Nazrul.

Upon interrogation. Fahim said he had come from Gazipur with some friends for an outing in a microbus, which was parked outside the police station.

“Police brought his three friends inside the station and seized the microbus.”

The microbus had a sticker bearing the logo of a private TV channel, the police officer said.

“The three acknowledged that Fahim was their friend and they had come for an outing. However, they weren’t aware that Fahim went inside the police station and caused chaos.”

Fahim is a student at a private university. He and his friends are being detained at the police station while police verify their backgrounds and intentions. Police contacted Fahim’s father over the phone but he hung up after some time.

“I believe Fahim could be mentally unstable or a drug user.”
