The three suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student and Chhatra Dal leader Shahriar Alam Shammo are all from outside the campus, according to the authorities.
Police said they had come to Dhaka a few days ago and launched a business on the footpath.
Shahriar, a student of the university’s Institute of Education and Research, was fatally stabbed on Tuesday night while riding a motorbike through Suhrawardy Udyan near the campus. He was a resident student from the 2018-19 session at the Sir AF Rahman Hall.
The 25-year-old was the literary and publications secretary of the BNP’s student wing Chhatra Dal at the university.
Later, his brother Shariful Islam initiated a case against up to 12 unidentified individuals over the incident, said Shahbagh Police Station chief Khalid Munsur.
Police have since arrested three suspects, none of whom were students of the university. The arrestees have been identified as Tamim Hawladar, 30, Palash Sardar, 30, and Samrat Mallick, 28.
“One of Shahriar's friends identified them and said two of them were on the scene,” said Shariful.
Sub-Inspector Toufiq Hasan, the case's investigating officer, said the suspects had launched a business on the footpath in the capital’s Farmgate a few days ago.
They told police that they came to Dhaka from Madaripur about 20 days ago.
"Initial investigation revealed that they had gone there to consume drugs," the police officer said.
They will be produced before a court with a petition for a 10-day remand, he added.
“They were arrested in a private hospital under the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, while two of the injured were receiving treatment there.”
Following the attack on Tuesday night, Shahriar was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s emergency unit, where doctors declared him dead.
His right leg bore a wound from a sharp weapon and doctors believe he died of excessive bleeding.
