Police have filed two cases in connection with the deaths of two people in a joint force operation in Dhaka's Mohammadpur area during an “exchange of gunfire with criminals”.

On Thursday night, Mehedi Hasan, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Mohammadpur Zone, announced two separate cases of murder, obstruction of government work and illegal possession of firearms.

He said, "In both cases, five people were arrested during the operation and 20-22 unidentified fugitives have been accused. The five detainees have been shown arrested and sent to court to petition for them to be remanded for seven days."

Late on Wednesday night, the joint forces conducted an operation at a house on Road No. 5 in Mohammadpur's Chand Udyan based on a tip-off about “preparations for a robbery”. The joint forces personnel then surrounded both sides of the alley leading to the hideout when the “criminals” opened fire.

The team immediately took countermeasures “in self-defence” and arrested five criminals along with weapons, the Inter-Services Public Relations said.

Afterwards, the bodies of two people, identified by single names as Jumman and Miraz, were found during a search on the roof. A pistol, four rounds of bullets and a machete were recovered from the detainees.

The detainees were identified as Al Amin, Miraj, Mohammad Hossain, Mominul and Mehedy Hasan. They have been shown arrested in the two cases filed by the police.

Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of the Mohammadpur Zone of DMP, said: “During the raid, they shot at the law enforcers with the intention of killing them. Since two people died in this incident, a murder case has been filed. And a separate case has been filed regarding the recovery of domestic weapons, including firearms.”

“The bodies of Jumman and Miraz were handed over to their families on Thursday after autopsies. There were multiple cases against them at Mohammadpur Police Station.”
