The body of a five-year-old girl has been found at a garbage dump a day after she went missing from Tejkunipara in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Thana area.
Police recovered the body from the capital's Bijoy Sarani on Tuesday and sent it to the morgue at Suhrawardy Medical College for an autopsy.
The child – named Roza Moni – had gone missing late on Monday afternoon. Her family and neighbours searched for her in different places, even using a megaphone to make public announcements regarding her disappearance.
Around 11am on Tuesday, locals searched inside a sack abandoned in a garbage dump underneath the flyover at Bijoy Sarani and found the child’s body. Burn marks were spotted on the corpse.
Mobarak Hossain, chief of Tejgaon Police Station, said that locals informed police after finding the body. Initially, law enforcers believe the child was killed and the body was hidden to dispose of it.
Sub-Inspector Abdul Quader of the Tejgaon Police Station said, “There are marks which look like burn injuries on the child’s body. We believe that hot water or something of the kind was poured over the body. We have sent the body to the morgue for an autopsy.”
A police official said that they are also considering the possibility that the child was raped before her murder. Forensic experts have been requested to examine the body for any possible signs during the autopsy.
