A Dhaka court has sentenced three people to death and five others to life in prison over the killings of three people during an arbitration meeting in Munshiganj in 2021.

Judge Masud Karim of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict on Thursday.

Sourav Prodhan, Rony Bepari and Shihab Prodhan were the suspects sentenced to death.

Shakib Prodhan, Shameem Prodhan, Anik Bepari, Raihan, and Choto Jahangir were sentenced to life in prison.

Shihab, Shakib and Shameem are brothers, according to the tribunal’s Special Public Prosecutor Md Billal Hossain.

According to the case dossier, there was a scuffle between two groups in the North Islampur area of Munshiganj on Mar 24, 2021. The two sides were called to an arbitration meeting that night to try and resolve the situation.

During the meeting, three people from one side – Md Emon Hossain, 22, Md Shakib Hossain, 19, and Mintu Prodhan, 40 – were stabbed to death by Sourav, Shihab, and Shameem’s side.

Mintu’s wife Khaleda Akhter filed a case over the murders the next day. The case named 12 suspects and accused another 10-15 unnamed individuals.
