The main task of the interim government is to hold a proper election after making the necessary reforms, says Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince.

He said, “We told the government that it's their key task. They shouldn’t go beyond it. Rather, the government may face difficulties (if they do so). Because we know this isn’t a regular or a unified government. It includes people with different opinions.”

“So, the important thing is to make the necessary reforms for a proper election, and then prepare the electoral roadmap. We can push forward the reform work by that time as much as possible. I hope that, through you, the government will prioritise this (election) as its main task,” Prince said in his opening speech during the dialogue with the National Consensus Commission at the LD Hall in the National Parliament on Tuesday.

He said that the CPB made the same statement in the dialogue with the chief advisor on Oct 5.

Prince said, “We always said that the interim government had some interim work. If the interim government takes up a bigger task beyond their routine work, it becomes troublesome for them.”

While performing these difficult tasks, the government may face debates and eventually, get into trouble in performing its main task, which is to hold a proper and acceptable election, he said. “Through you, we’re reminding (the government) about the issue.”

CPB believes the electoral roadmap should be announced after the necessary reforms for a proper election.

Prince said, “We want a consensus. However, with the recent protest movement, groups with different opinions have developed and it will be hard if you want to achieve a full consensus. Therefore, move forward with as much consensus as you can achieve.”

He said it would be “one step of progress” if there was an election after the necessary reforms.

Prince also complained there was a “debate” about the Liberation War in the beginning of the current government’s reign.

He said, ”We saw in the beginning some statements which went against the Liberation War. As if the Liberation War was replaced, and 2024 was the continuation of 1947. These types of statements created the debate initially. We hope these debates will stop.”

Earlier, National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Ali Riaz gave the welcome speech for the meeting.

The CPB delegation was led by its President Mohammad Shah Alam and General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince and included Mihir Ghosh, A N Rasheda, Kazi Sazzad Zahir Chandan, Aniruddha Das Anjan, Kazi Ruhul Amin and others.

Members of the National Consensus Commission present at the event included Badiul Alam Majumdar, Safar Raj Hossain, Iftekharuzzaman, Justice Emdadul Haque, and the chief advisor's special aide Monir Haider.
