At least two people have died after they drank alcoholic “spirits” after buying them from a homeopathic medicine shop in Siragjanj’s Belkuchi Upazila.

Another person has been admitted to the hospital over the incident.

One of the victims died while undergoing treatment at the Sirajganj Sadar Hospital on Wednesday evening and the other died while he was being taken to Shahid Mansur Ali Medical College and Hospital, said Inspector (Investigation) Abdul Barik of Belkuchi Police Station.

The dead were identified as butcher Abul Kalam, 45, from Doulatpur’s Bashtala and rickshaw-van driver Shah Alam, 43, from Doulatpur’s Moti Market.

Post Master Abu Hanif, 35, of Doulatpur Union Post Office has been admitted to the Shahid Mansur Ali Medical College and Hospital with health issues. He hails from Doulatpur’s Dakkhinpara.

Inspector Abdul Barik said that on Tuesday night, a few people bought “intoxicating spirits” from the homeopathic medicine store owned by Babu Doctor at Kandapara Bazar.

When they fell sick, three of them were admitted to the Sirajganj Sadar Hospital. Abul Kalam died under hospital care on Wednesday evening. Shah Alam died on his way to the Mansur Ali Medical College Hospital.

Inspector Barik said that homeopathic medicine trader Babu Doctor has been absconding the incident occurred.

The bodies were recovered and sent to the morgue for an autopsy. Legal steps are underway over the incident, the police officer said.
