Local residents have nabbed a man and handed him to the police after he allegedly stabbed both his parents in Khagrachhari’s Matiranga Upazila.

The incident took place around 12:45am on Friday in the Camptila area of the Upazila’s Belchhari neighbourhood, said Matiranga Police Station chief Md Tafiqul Islam Toufiq.

The suspect, 38-year-old Abul Kalam, had been arguing with his parents after they allegedly refused to give him money to support his drug addiction, according to locals.

During the altercation, Kalam reportedly slit the throat of his 60-year-old mother Amena Begum before turning on his 70-year-old father Md Abdur Rahim when he tried to intervene, leaving them both critically injured.

Hearing their cries for help, neighbours rushed to the scene and took the couple to the local health complex. Later, they were transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, Abul Kalam attempted to flee after the incident, but locals apprehended him and handed him over to the police.

Toufiq said that the police were taking the necessary legal steps against the perpetrator.
