The forensic department of Dhaka Medical College has identified the body of a man killed in August’s mass uprising through DNA profiling with his family.

Jatrabari Police Station chief Kamruzzaman Talukder said on Friday that the process of handing over 19-year-old Mohammad Hasan’s body to his family was underway.

Hasan was killed in Jatrabari on Aug 5 during the student-public movement.

He worked at an electronics shop in Kaptan Bazar.

His body was among seven unclaimed corpses that have remained in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for the past six months.

Among them are one woman and five men.

“Hasan’s DNA has matched. The necessary documentation for the handover is almost complete from our end. We will return the body to his family,” said OC Kamruzzaman.

Hasan’s uncle, Nur Alam, told bdnews24.com that Hasan was shot dead near Jatrabari Police Station on Aug 5.

His body was taken to the morgue, but due to disfigurement, it was unrecognisable at the time.

On Jan 12, the family submitted DNA samples to the forensic department, and on Thursday, they were told that the DNA had matched.

“At that time, we saw a Facebook post showing a body from Jatrabari, and we thought it looked like Hasan.

“He was wearing pyjamas and a panjabi, had a light beard, and a wire was wrapped around his leg. But his face was damaged, so we couldn’t recognise him,” said Nur Alam.

Hasan was the eldest of four siblings born to Monir Hossain and Golenur Begum from Bagchi village in Bhola Sadar Upazila.

He lived in the Suti Khalpar Balur Math area of Jatrabari.

His uncle said Hasan’s funeral prayers would be held at Dhaka University’s central mosque on Friday before the state-arranged burial in his village.
