Three people have died and at least 15 others were hospitalised after consuming “bootleg alcohol” in Satkhira's Assasuni Upazila on Eid day.

The victims, who fell ill after drinking toxic liquor late Monday, were admitted to hospitals in Assasuni and Satkhira in the wee hours of Tuesday, according to Noman Hossain, chief of Assasuni Police Station.

The dead have been identified as Nazmul Hossain, 35, Titu Khan, 38, and Imran Hossain, 25.

“Several friends drank alcohol at Tentulia Bazar on Eid night. Later, they fell sick one-by-one,” said Shahabuddin, a local resident.

“Since dawn, patients have been arriving at Assasuni Upazila Health Complex, Satkhira Sadar Hospital, and Satkhira Medical College.”

He said that at least seven of those affected were in critical condition.

Prasun Kumar, resident medical officer at Assasuni Upazila Health Complex, said that one patient died at his facility, while others succumbed at hospitals in Satkhira.

“So far, we have received reports of three deaths,” said Noman.

“The families have told us the victims consumed toxic alcohol.”
