Farzana Rupa, former chief correspondent at Ekattor Television, who is currently in jail, will soon be questioned in the journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Nahar Runi murder case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam granted permission for her interrogation on Mar 4.

Speaking to bdnews24.com on Tuesday, the case’s investigating officer, Additional Superintendent of Police Azizul Haque from the Police Bureau of Investigation, or PBI, said: “Farzana Rupa has not been questioned yet, but she will be interrogated soon.”

SI Rafiqul Islam, the general registration officer of the court's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, told bdnews24.com on Tuesday that the court granted approval for Farzana’s interrogation following a plea filed by the investigating officer on Feb 27.

According to the application, at the time of the journalist couple’s murder, Rupa was working as a reporter for ATN Bangla.

She had close ties with Sagar and Runi both personally and professionally, frequently visiting their home.

Farzana had also reported on the incident for television.

Investigators believe questioning her could yield crucial information.

On Feb 11, 2012, journalist couple Sagar and Runi were murdered in their rented home in Dhaka’s West Rajabazar.

At the time, Sagar was employed by the private television channel Maasranga TV, while Runi worked for ATN Bangla.

Runi's brother, Nausher Ali Roman, filed a case with the Sher-e-Bangla Police Station in connection with the murder.

On Sept 30, the High Court ordered the case to be transferred from the Rapid Action Battalion, or RAB, to a high-powered task force under the home ministry for further investigation.

After the government change, Rupa and her husband, journalist Shakil Ahmed, were arrested at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport on Aug 21, 2024, while allegedly attempting to leave the country.

They were later shown as arrested in a murder case filed at Adabor Police Station and were remanded twice for questioning.

The duo were also shown arrested in another murder case filed in Mirpur Police Station linked to the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, with both placed on a five-day remand.
