The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a “well-marked low”, which will lead to more rain across the country, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
Rain is forecast for the next two to three days starting on Thursday, said Meteorologist Kazi Zebunnesa on Wednesday.
There will be more rainfall to the west of the country.
“[The rain] will slowly decrease, but it will not stop completely. The monsoon is already set. Some rain is to be expected now.”
The meteorologist says that the well-marked low could even develop into a depression, but it is unlikely that the weather system will move towards Bangladesh.
According to the BMD’s warning notice on Wednesday, the well-marked low could lead to squalls and gusty winds in the north Bay of Bengal, the coastal area, and at maritime ports.
The ports at Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed cautiously until further notice.
The BMD’s regular bulletin says most of the Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions and parts of the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions are expected to experience temporary gusty winds, accompanied by lightning, and light to moderate rain or thunderstorms in the 24 hours from 9am on Wednesday.
Parts of the Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions could see moderate to heavy rain over the period.
In the 24 hours to 6am on Wednesday, Chattogram’s Ambagan saw the most rain with 27mm recorded. Patuakhali’s Khepupara saw 26mm, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Jashore saw 19mm, and Patuakhali saw 18mm.
Usually, 1-10mm of rain is considered light, 11-22 is considered moderate, 23-43mm is considered moderately heavy, 44-88mm is considered heavy, and above 88mm is considered very heavy.
Daytime temperatures across the country may fall by 1-2 degrees Celsius over the next 24 hours, while the nighttime temperature may also dip slightly, the forecast says.
