An emergency meeting of the Advisory Council has been convened amid blockades across Dhaka, including at Shahbagh, demanding a ban on the Awami League.
Energy Advisor Fouzul Kabir Khan told bdnews24.com that the meeting will be held at 8pm on Saturday.
“The meeting will discuss the course of action in light of recent developments,” he said.
The meeting is scheduled for Saturday evening at the chief advisor’s official residence, State Guest House Jamuna, according to an official from his office.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, the official confirmed the emergency meeting had been called, though the agenda was not disclosed.
The meeting follows rising tensions following reports of former president Md Abdul Hamid leaving the country.
On Thursday night, a group of protesters led by NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah staged a sit-in outside the Jamuna residence.
The protest drew solidarity from Jamaat-e-Islami, AB Party, Islami Chhatra Shibir, Islami Andolon Bangladesh, Hifazat-e Islam, and several other student groups involved in the July 2024 anti-discrimination movement against the Awami League government.
On Friday afternoon, the protesters set up a stage at the entrance to Minto Road and held a rally, carrying placards and banners calling for the Awami League to be banned.
Leaders and activists from several political parties joined the demonstration.
From the rally, NCP’s southern coordinator Hasnat announced a blockade at Shahbagh.
By 4pm, protesters began marching toward Shahbagh, effectively cutting off traffic on all roads leading to the area.
A mass gathering has been announced there for Saturday afternoon.
Amid Friday’s rally on Minto Road, the Chief Advisor’s Office said in a statement that the government is “seriously considering” the demand to ban the Awami League.
A decision will be made soon in consultation with political parties, the statement added.
It also noted that steps have already been taken to introduce “necessary amendments” to the International Crimes Tribunal Act to enable action against organisations involved in crimes against humanity.
