3 remanded over murder of Jatrabari businessman

Three suspects in the murder case of businessman Yasin Gazi have been remanded to police for interrogation in their custody.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah made the decision after a hearing on Monday.

The suspects remanded are Al Amin, Nazma Begum and Sabina Akhtar.

Jatrabari police brought the suspects to court and petitioned for them to be remanded for seven days. Lawyer SM Zakir Hossain, representing the accused, petitioned for the remand petition to be scrapped and for them to be granted bail. After the hearing concluded, the magistrate remanded them for two days.

Yasin’s wife Sharmin Akhter filed a case against Al Amin, his wife Nazma, their relative Harun and Harun’s wife Sabina over his death.

She alleges that Yasin, 30, owned a restaurant named Maer Doa in Kazla’s Chantek. About four months ago, he sold the restaurant to Al Amin for Tk 270,000. Of that amount, Tk 10,000 had not been paid yet.

Yasin and his wife went to Al Amin’s house to collect the money around 10pm on Sunday. When Yasin asked him for the money, an argument ensued. The other suspects then came in and got involved in a tussle with Yasin. The case alleges that at one point in the scuffle, Al Amin struck Yasin with a blade.

Yasin was critically injured and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Yasin hailed from the Dhalirghat area of Chandpur Sadar Thana. He lived with his wife and two sons in the Saddam Market area.

Yasin’s wife Sharmin said, “They killed my husband when we asked for the Tk 10,000 we were owed. My two sons have lost their father. I want capital punishment for them – I want them hanged.”

Sub Inspector Farhad Ali of Jatrabari Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, said: “The arrested suspects said that the killing occurred due to a dispute over money that was owed. We will question them about whether there was any other mystery involved in the incident.”
