National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Ali Riaz has said that the dialogues with political parties are aimed at establishing a "democratic state".

"For the last 53 years, the people have carried the aspiration for democracy. These discussions aim to pave the way towards the realisation of that aspiration so that together, we can build a truly democratic state," he said on Monday.

Riaz made the remarks in his opening speech during a dialogue with Gono Odhikar Parishad at the LD Hall of the National Parliament.

Calling for unity on state reform efforts, he said: "Everyone must continue their efforts, through democratic practice and unity, and collectively work towards drafting a National Charter."

"The aim of the Consensus Commission is to prepare a National Charter that will reshape the distribution of power and awaken Bangladesh to its full potential."

He continued, "The reports, opinions, and recommendations from the reform commissions alone are not enough. Only through the unity of all political and democratic forces can we advance toward a new Bangladesh."

"It’s not just about what we write; we must move forward through practice, commitment, and collective promises. We are engaged in that endeavour."

Riaz called for the possibilities created through the sacrifices and leadership of the youth to be realised through collective efforts. "We are united in this journey and will remain so, urging continued solidarity."

The National Consensus Commission had sought opinions on state reform from 39 political parties via a spreadsheet format. So far, 35 parties have submitted their views, and dialogues have been completed with 19 of them. The commission is now holding discussions with Gono Odhikar Parishad, the 20th party on the list.

Recalling the role of the current leaders of Gono Odhikar Parishad in the 2018 Quota Reform Movement, Riaz said: "Their fearless struggle marked a new phase in the anti-fascist movement, which culminated in the unprecedented and remarkable mass uprising of 2024."

The meeting, moderated by the Chief Advisor’s Special Assistant Monir Haider, was attended by commission members Safar Raj Hossain, Emdadul Hoque, Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Iftekharuzzaman.

The nine-strong delegation of Gono Odhikar Parishad included President Nurul Haque Nur, General Secretary Rashed Khan, and Senior Vice President Faruk Hasan.
