Interim government’s Information Advisor Mahfuj Alam has said that the government cannot decide to ban Awami League all by itself.

On Wednesday, he said: “The government believes that this decision cannot be taken without consulting political parties, as well as domestic and international stakeholders.”

"People have repeatedly asked us to ban Awami League. We believe that the government will take this decision after consulting with everyone," he added.

Mahfuj made the remarks during a visit to his ancestral home in Lakshmipur, where he met with his family members and prayed at the graves of his grandparents. He also visited a madrasa.

On the timeline for the next parliamentary election, Mahfuj confirmed that Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus had set a tentative period between December 2025 and June 2026.

The exact dates, however, would depend on the interim government’s reformation agenda, he added.

“There is no uncertainty about whether elections will happen, they will definitely take place within this timeline. Political parties should prepare accordingly,” he advised.
