The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a warning that a “well-marked low” pressure system that formed over the Bay of Bengal may lead to heavy rains across six divisions of the country alongside possibilities of landslides in some hilly areas of the country.

In a warning message, the Met Office said the well-marked low could intensify further and cause heavy rainfall in many parts of Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet over the next 48 hours from 6pm on Wednesday.

The rain may also trigger landslides in some parts of the hilly areas of Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Bandarban and Cox's Bazar districts.

The BMD also warned that the rain may cause waterlogging in the Dhaka and Chattogram cities.

Usually, 1-10mm of rain is considered light, 11-22 is considered moderate, 23-43mm is considered moderately heavy, 44-88mm is considered heavy, and above 88mm is considered very heavy.

On Tuesday, a low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal, which later intensified and turned into a well-marked low.

Earlier, Meteorologist Kazi Zebunnesa said that the low could even develop into a depression, but the weather system is unlikely to move towards Bangladesh.
