With rain pouring in Dhaka, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders and activists have blocked the Shahbagh intersection, demanding justice for the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo, a leader of the organisation’s campus unit.

The blockade, launched after 3:30 pm on Tuesday, caused a severe traffic bottleneck in Shahbagh and surrounding areas, piling misery upon commuters towards the end of the day’s work as the tailback stretched from Shahbagh to the Kataban intersection.

The demonstrators shouted slogans demanding justice for Shammo’s murder at the Shahbagh intersection.

Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said, “This government and the Dhaka University (DU) administration have failed to arrest Shammo’s killers. We have not seen any progress so far.

“We demand the immediate resignation of this government and the Dhaka University administration."

On Tuesday night, Shammo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research in the 2018-19 session, was stabbed and grievously wounded after getting into an altercation over a motorbike crash near the Suhrawardy Udyan section of the campus.

The 25-year-old was then rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where emergency doctors declared him dead.

The next morning, Shammo’s elder brother Shariful Alam filed a case with Shahbagh police accusing “10-12 people” of the murder. The police arrested three people in connection with the case and took them in for questioning with a court order.

Chhatra Dal and DU students have been protesting for a week, demanding justice for Shammo’s murder. They also blocked the Shahbagh intersection earlier and held protests and rallies.
