Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has called on young people to embrace entrepreneurship over traditional employment.

Speaking at the BIMSTEC Young Generation Forum in Bangkok on Thursday, Yunus argued that sustainable development depends on a generation of self-starting innovators rather than job seekers.

“The youth should develop themselves as entrepreneurs instead of job seekers,” he said.

“Only then is sustainable development possible.”

He described today’s young generation as the most powerful in history.

The chief advisor also urged them to begin their ventures on a modest scale rather than seeking immediate, sweeping change.

"You cannot change the world in a day...If you want to change, start from your village," he said.

Encouraging engagement in social entrepreneurship, Yunus said: “Social business is to solve social problems where it does not accumulate wealth.”

His remarks came as he attended the sixth summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), a regional organisation that brings together nations from South and Southeast Asia.

The summit, which began on Apr 2, will culminate in a meeting of heads of state and government on Friday.

Yunus is expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from several BIMSTEC member states before concluding his visit to Thailand on Apr 4.
