As many as 100 unidentified people have been accused in a criminal case started over the attack on the convoy of Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) southern unit, in Gazipur.

Bason Police Station chief Shaheen Khan said NCP Sadar Convenor Khandaker Al Amin had initiated the case as the plaintiff on Monday.

He said many unidentified individuals were accused in the case. As many as 54 people detained in the case since the incident have been sent to jail custody through the court in the evening.

Hasnat's car was attacked near Chandna intersection in Gazipur on Sunday evening, police said.

He had been returning home after attending an event at the Gazipur Agricultural University. As his vehicle was stuck in traffic at the intersection, a group of men on four or five motorcycles came and attacked it.

In the attack, the car’s glass and windshield were broken and the NCP leader suffered injuries. He was later brought to Dhaka by police.

After conducting an overnight raid, police detained 54 people, most of whom were Awami League activists.

Al Amin said, “We filed the case through discussions following the instructions of the central leaders. We want no innocent person to be harassed. I request the police administration to arrest the perpetrators quickly.”

Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Administration) Zahid Hasan said, “A case has been filed after sorting and verifying the information of the detainees. A special operation is underway to arrest others involved.”
